Learn Why cancer of the Lung is Caused by Using Cigarettes

Is there anybody that does not know that smoking cigarettes is an unhealthy activity? Tobacco smoke causes a variety of debilitating illnesses, many of which result in an early death. If you do not die of a tobacco related disease your lifestyle could be severely curtailed on account of lung function impairment.

We probably all recognize that people continue to smoke cigarettes because they are addicted to nicotine. After a year or so of regular smoking the brain adjusts and requires nicotine to feel normal. The dependency occurs when you grow to be irritable without a supply of nicotine. The extremely quick return to a normal feeling when smoking a cigarette makes smoking among the strongest addictions know to man.

The smoke from cigarettes is composed principally of air containing nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide. But, it is the 3500 to 4000 additional chemical compounds in the smoke that cause the damage. Somewhere around fifty five of these compounds are recognized to be carcinogens which cause laboratory animals and humans to develop cancerous tumors. And greater than 20 of these carcinogens have been verified as producing lung tumors in at least one animal species.

Here’s how this works. Compounds like 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons produce cancerous tumors. Such compounds bind themselves to DNA, damaging the DNA. When the DNA cells try to replicate, a mutation can result and start a cancerous tumor.

The body affords some control over these mutated cells. Some cells can be prevented from further replication, some cells can be repaired, and yet other cells could be programmed for an early death. But, if these mechanisms of aberrant cell management themselves become damaged, normal growth management fails and the cells multiply in an uncontrolled fashion. Uncontrolled multiplication of cells represents a cancer malignancy and may proliferate past the lungs to adjoining organs.

Other compounds in tobacco smoke have to transition through chemical changes before they will bind to DNA and start their destruction. Whether it is a direct assault on the DNA or an indirect chemical transformation, its these DNA adducts that cause the uncontrolled replication we call a cancer.

The good news is that less than 20% of smokers will get lung cancer. But, dodging lung cancer does not mean that the tars and other compounds in tobacco smoke won’t take their toll on lung function. Many people without lung cancer require oxygen and have drastically reduced lifestyles on account of cigarette smoking.

The best advice is to stop smoking. Risks of lung cancer diminish significantly after 5 years of non-smoking.

Even if you’ve made numerous attempts to give up smoking, you’ve got another option: smokeless cigarettes. The new smokeless cigarettes vaporize a small quantity of nicotine and some optionally available flavoring to give you the sensation of smoking. You’ve probably seen them advertised. Now is the time to give up smoking and try these smokeless cigarettes.
